What is an AXIOM? It has meaning in mathematics… it has meaning in every day life, and it has meaning in our faith. So let’s start with a definition:
Axiom is a self-evident truth that requires no proof, or serves as an established norm. It states a universal principle whose self evidence is not questioned (within a given system of philosophy or religious doctrine).
Here is an axiom of faith: God exists and is the ultimate, transcendent and non-contingent Being. God exists in and of Himself; there is none greater and so God is the ultimate. And God doesn’t depend on anything for His existence. An axiom for us to recall when we feel like speaking to God (e.g. giving Him a piece of our mind) about how things should be done.
So our guest for this week’s podcast is Dr. Mary A. Ward, Ph.D., Adjunct Associate Professor of Theology at Fordham University. She is a long-time listener to Catholic Vitamins — and she is a woman of depth and leadership. While we could have gone in many directions looking at the word AXIOM — Mary decided to tackle the axiom of love in the Gospel or Christian faith walk sense. God is love. God loved us first. And we are called to love God in return with our whole heart and mind and soul. And we are called to love our neighbor as ourself. How is this possible for us mortals?
We are so thankful we had Dr. Ward to help us look at and consider this axiom of a broad and basic rule of truth.
A FEW REAL WORLD OR HUMOROUS AXIOMS
He who laughs last…. thinks slowest
Change is inevitable…. except from a vending machine
She’s always late. Her ancestors came over on the Juneflower
A day without sunshine is…. night 🙂
