Catholic Vitamin P: Proverbs

Some of us are full of knowledge. Knowledge can be little more than raw facts or data. But wisdom (which is mentioned often in the Book of Proverbs) is the ability to see history and human experience and the events in our lives in a way that God may see them. There are Proverbs about matters of great importance, and there are Proverbs about everyday situations. There are Proverbs on raising children and about how much alcohol is too much! Proverbs have much to say and share about Wisdom.

Our guest for the Catholic Vitamins Podcast associated with this Blog is Sister Kathleen Glavich. She has written more than sixty books (see bio material and a list of her books below. Anyone who has written sixty or more books is someone well-worth spending time with. We are and have been blessed to get to know Sister Kathleen. She was kind enough to sort of credit us with perhaps a spark of an idea — maybe writing her own book about the Proverbs. Let’s see – – would that be book number sixty four, Sister? 🙂

Please make sure you see further down in this blog page for more information about Sister Glavich.

Ah yes, the wisdom of the Book of Proverbs has much to share with us. And then there are

IRISH PROVERBS

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

A buckle is a great addition to an old shoe.

A closed mouth–a wise head

A fool and his money are easily parted.

A good beginning is half the work.

A greyhound finds food in its feet.

A guest should be blind in another man’s house.

A heavy purse makes a light heart.

A little of anything isn’t worth a pin; but a wee bit of sense is worth a lot

If you open your eyes and heart to God’s Holy and Inspired Word as found in the Book of Proverbs — you’ll find the place where the Irish might have gotten the ‘wisdom’ they profess in their proverbs.

How about these:

Proverbs 1:5. “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.”

Proverbs 1:7. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Proverbs 4:5. “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.”

Proverbs 8:13-14. “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power.”
