Catholic Vitamin S Silence

poustinia cabinHave you ever read the spiritual classic POUSTINIA? Servant of God Catherine Doherty wrote Poustinia in 1975 using this Russian word meaning DESERT. In the desert, there is SILENCE. And today on our show, Dee Fox, Candy Bridges, Bev and Bob Furst — all members of our Faith Traveler’s group share what it’s like to enter into the desert-like silence of a Poustinia cabin.

What is it that we don’t like about the absence of noise? TV… music…. ourselves or someone else feeling the need to always be speaking? We are all so connected. Many Catholics don’t even participate in silent Adoration before God in the Blessed Sacrament.

Mother Teresa wrote these words: “In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.”

We spoke of Madonna House during this show. You can find their website at www.madonnahouse.org   And if you place a /publications  after the link shown, you can find the book POUSTINIA and many other of Catherine Doherty’s writings and those of staff and associates.
